John AndrewJames Lyon is a graduate in Arts from Glasgow University and in Law from St Andrews University and McGill University. At McGill he held the Glasgow-McGill Exchange Scholarship and the Scholarship of the Principal’s  and Deans’ Committee of Glasgow University. With Sand and Pratt, he wrote “An Historical Survey of the Law of Flight”, McGill University Press, 1961.

He was admitted a solicitor in Scotland in 1963; a member of the Society of Writers to HM Signet in 1968. Called to the bars of Nova Scotia in 1966, Saskatchewan in 1981, and Ontario in 1991, he was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1989 and elected  a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society in 2003.

While an undergraduate Mr Lyon served as a pilot in the RAFVR  and thereafter (1955-1957) in the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy. 

Mr Lyon has worked in the practice of law (private, corporate, and administrative), administration and management. He has experience with airlines and aircraft manufacturers in Canada and the UK,  and the public service of Canada as departmental general counsel and assistant deputy minister. He led  the manufacturer’s representation at the UK Board of Trade Fatal Accidents Inquiry into the aircraft crash with the then-record number of fatalities; advised on other aircraft accidents; chaired interdepartmental committees in the public service; led the Canadian delegation to the Diplomatic Conference that concluded the Convention on the Limitation of Liability in Maritime Claims; and prepared rulings on appeals to the Governor in Council. He has been a director in private and public corporations and consultant to the International Monetary Fund and World Bank.

He has assisted in the non-litigious resolution of many contract and other commercial disputes and congregational and broader church disputes. These last led him  to systematic study of conflict and conflict-resolution, and then to participation in the Mediation Centre of Southeastern Ontario.

In matters not governed by Rule 24.1 (Mandatory Mediations), Travel Expenses may be charged. Reimbursement will not ordinarily be sought for Travel Time.
